RIOCOM as innovative partner in the EU project RAINMAN

RIOCOM was commissioned by the Office of the Styrian Government to set up a toolkit for emergency response planning for heavy rainfall events. The biggest challenge for us is to display the complex analysis and planning processes in an easy-to-understand, practice-oriented “construction manual”. Local authorities and emergency services should thus be able to work out their plans for preventive and intervention measures.

In two test areas in Graz, we investigate urban flash floods caused by catastrophic rainfall events. Here, we use Visdom to model surface runoff coupled with the sewer system. On the basis of the hazard and risk analyses produced, we test the toolkit and develop an emergency response plan in collaboration with the city of Graz.
