Local knowledge is made useful here!

Despite all the technical possibilities, experience, local know-how and a certain degree of human intuition are indispensable success factors when it comes to recognising natural hazard events in time and efficiently minimising their effects.

Especially employees of network-like organised infrastructural facilities such as railway lines are regularly on the move in the field and know the natural conditions and the special, local conditions like no one else. Although they have valuable local knowledge, they currently lack the methods and tools to use it in a structured way in the context of natural hazard management. In addition, natural hazards sometimes differ greatly from one another and are difficult to assess.

The presented project addresses this challenge and aims at developing an intelligent decision support methodology for natural hazard and risk management of local actors of transport infrastructure companies, which takes into account normal as well as crisis and disaster operations and guides them in a structured way through the assessment and decision-making process.
In this ffg-funded project RIOCOM cooperates with Lo.La Peak Solutions GmbH and the University of Innsbruck – Institute of Geography. Further information can be found here.

“The INGEMAR project brings together experienced companies and scientists with expertise in avalanches, floods, flash floods and gravitational hazard processes. This exciting team will develop an innovative and integral concept for natural hazard management of transport infrastructures for ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG.”
