An almost fully automated method

In the project “Flood Damage Potential: Evaluation and Prognosis of the Hydrological Development” of the Regional Government of Upper Austria, RIOCOM and the Institute of Water Management, Hydrology and Hydraulic Engineering (IWHW) of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences have developed an almost fully automated method for the calculation of damage potential in an arbitrarily large area – at district or country level, for example.

The core part of this method is the extraction of buildings from ortho-photos and the calculation of damage potential in a flood plain at different times using GIS.

The results can be used

  • To identify municipalities and regions with a high absolute damage potential or a high dynamic of the damage potential.
  • To recommend appropriate measures in order to reduce the potential damage in these areas.
